Overview
The Balearic Islands offer four distinct personalities in one compact sailing area. Mallorca combines dramatic mountain scenery with sophisticated harbors. Ibiza delivers legendary nightlife alongside hidden coves of startling beauty. Menorca is the tranquil, unspoiled alternative with pristine beaches. And tiny Formentera offers Caribbean-white sand and crystal-clear waters just a short sail from Ibiza.
Sailing insights
The Balearics offer pleasant sailing with moderate winds and short distances between islands. The Tramontana (N wind) and Embat (thermal sea breeze) provide reliable conditions. Mallorca's north coast can be exposed, but the south and east offer sheltered coves (calas). The passage between Mallorca and Menorca (35 NM) is the longest open-water crossing.
The Balearics are ideal for combining sailing with shore-based activities. Mallorca's Tramuntana mountains offer world-class cycling and hiking. Ibiza's nightlife needs no introduction, but the island's north coast is surprisingly peaceful. Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with some of the Mediterranean's best-preserved beaches. Formentera's Ses Illetes beach rivals any Caribbean beach.
Wind Conditions
Thermal Embat Force 2-4 afternoons. Tramontana (N) occasionally stronger.
