Overview
The Dodecanese archipelago stretches along Turkey's southwestern coast, offering a unique blend of Greek island charm and Eastern Mediterranean influences. These 12 main islands (and over 150 smaller ones) boast medieval castles from the Knights of St. John, volcanic landscapes, Byzantine monasteries, and some of the warmest waters in Greece. From the cosmopolitan buzz of Rhodes to the spiritual serenity of Patmos, the Dodecanese reward sailors with diversity and discovery.
Sailing insights
Sailing the Dodecanese offers moderate conditions with the Meltemi less intense than in the Cyclades. Winds are typically Force 3–5 from the northwest in summer. The proximity to Turkey provides shelter, and many anchorages are well-protected. Distances between islands range from 10–30 NM, making for comfortable day sails.
The Dodecanese offer a wonderful mix of Greek and Turkish-influenced culture. The Meltemi here is more moderate than in the Cyclades, making it suitable for intermediate sailors. The proximity to Turkey means you can potentially include a Turkish port in your itinerary (check regulations). Symi is the undisputed gem — its neoclassical harbor is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.
Wind Conditions
NW Meltemi Force 3–5 in summer, lighter in spring/autumn. More moderate than Cyclades.
