Overview

The Cyclades are the quintessential Greek island experience — a scattered constellation of over 30 islands in the heart of the Aegean Sea. From the iconic caldera of Santorini to the cosmopolitan nightlife of Mykonos, from the marble quarries of Paros to the towering peaks of Naxos, each island offers its own distinct character. Sailing the Cyclades means navigating between whitewashed villages perched on clifftops, swimming in impossibly blue waters, and dining on fresh seafood as the sun sets over the Aegean.

Sailing insights

The Cyclades offer challenging and rewarding sailing with the famous Meltemi wind dominating from June to September. This northerly wind can reach Force 6–7, making it ideal for experienced sailors who enjoy spirited sailing. The distances between islands are moderate (15–40 NM), and the crystal-clear waters with excellent visibility make navigation straightforward despite the wind. Anchorages can be exposed to the Meltemi, so careful planning and local knowledge are essential.

The Meltemi is the defining feature of Cycladic sailing. This strong northerly wind typically builds from late morning, peaks in the afternoon, and eases in the evening. Plan your passages for early morning when winds are lighter. The western sides of islands are generally more sheltered. Always have a Plan B anchorage in mind. The Cyclades reward sailors who respect the conditions — the combination of reliable wind, stunning scenery, and authentic Greek culture makes this one of the world's premier sailing grounds.

Wind Conditions

Meltemi (northerly) dominates summer, Force 4–7. Spring and autumn offer gentler Force 3–5 conditions.

Practical tips

1

Book marinas in advance during July–August, especially in Mykonos and Santorini

2

Carry enough water — some smaller islands have limited supplies

3

The Meltemi typically blows from the north; plan routes accordingly

4

Fuel up at every opportunity — not all islands have fuel stations

5

Respect the no-anchoring zones around Santorini caldera (use mooring buoys)

6

Early morning departures are key to avoiding the strongest Meltemi

7

Greek tavernas near marinas often offer free mooring if you dine there
